Folikulitida is an inflammation of one or more follicles. It can appear anywhere on the skin.
Folliculitis begins when hair follicles are damaged by friction from clothing, blockage of the follicle, or shaving. In most cases of folliculitis, damaged follicles are then infected with bacteria aureus (staph).
Common symptoms include rash, itching, pimples or pustules near a hair follicle in the neck, abdomen, or genital area. pimples may crust over.
Hot moist compresses may help to drain the affected follicles. Treatment may include antibiotics applied to the skin (mupirocin) or taken by mouth (dicloxacillin), antifungal drugs or to control the infection.
