Ovarian Cancer - It is cancer that forms in the tissues of the ovaries in women. The ovaries are the female reproductive glands located on either side of the uterus (the organ where a baby grows and develops during pregnancy). The ovaries produce estrogen and progesterone (female hormones). The ovaries also produce, eggs (called ovules). Ovarian cancer develops when normal ovarian cells begin to grow out of control and cause malignant tumors in one or both ovaries.
-Ovarian cancer is called the "silent killer" because there are no symptoms until the disease has advanced and the chance of cure or remission is very low. However, the following symptoms are much more likely to occur in women with ovarian cancer than women in the general population. These symptoms include:
Pelvic or abdominal pain
Backache or legs
Diarrhea, gas, nausea, constipation, indigestion
Difficulty eating or feeling full
urinary symptoms (urgency or frequency)
Pain during intercourse
Abnormal vaginal bleeding
Women with ovarian cancer report that symptoms are persistent and represent a change from normal for their bodies. Frequency and / or number of such symptoms are key factors in the diagnosis of ovarian cancer. Several studies show that even early stage ovarian cancer can produce these symptoms. Women who have these symptoms almost daily for more than a few weeks should see their doctor, preferably a gynecologist. Prompt medical evaluation may lead to detection of the disease as early as possible. Early diagnosis is associated with a poor prognosis improved stage.
The current treatment of ovarian cancer is based on the combination of surgery with chemotherapy plus radiation sometimes.
